Grass Trees Wall Art Prints

Grass Trees Wall Art Prints Glass trees, any plant of the genus Xanthorrhoea of the family Xanthorrhoeaceae, with about 17 species native to eastern Australia. They have thick, woody, often palm like stems about 5 m tall that end in a tuft of rigid, grass like leaves from which flower spikes resembling those of the bulrush. Grass trees are very much part of the Australian landscape and uniquely Australian. They fascinated the first settlers, since they were unlike any other known plant. In fact, they are a living fossil developed early in the evolutionary stakes for flowering plants. All are perennials and have a secondary thickening meristem in the stem. Many, but not all, species develop an above ground stem. This is rough-surfaced, built from accumulated leaf-bases around the secondarily thickened trunk. The trunk is sometimes branched, some species will branch if the growing point is damaged, and others naturally grow numerous branches. Flowers are borne on a long spike above a bare section called a scape; the total length can be up to four meters long in some species. Flowering occurs in a distinct flowering period, which varies for each species. Flowering can be stimulated by bushfire, in which case it occurs in the next flowering period after the fire. The trees are also known as grass gums because of the red or yellow gum like resins that exude from the bases of old leaves. The resins are used for varnish. They are very slow growing, with some elderly specimens being amongst the oldest living plants on a worldwide scale, surviving for many hundreds of years.
