Sunset photography is a favorite subject any time of the year. The rich colours, dramatic lighting and strong shapes they offer can produce stunning shots with little need for much effort or clever planning from you. For most of us, the temptation to shoot a sunset when we first see it is overwhelming. But while there’s something to be said for getting a shot in the bag quickly, in case the conditions change, it can be worth spending a little longer over it to make sure you get everything right. Everyone has sunrise-sunset images with glowing colors. For those photographers that want their sunrise-sunset image to rise above the norm, something more is needed. One of the biggest challenges with sunrise-sunset shots is dynamic range: the range of tones in the sunrise-sunset, and the surrounding environment, can be greater than the camera can handle. This is particularly true if the sun is still above the horizon. Sometimes, it is possible to set the exposure to prevent the brightest areas from clipping; then, the other tones are left to fall where they may. Sunsets are one of the most common and widely photographed events in nature. They are stunning and inspiring to watch and never seem to last quite long enough before everything is over. Once the sun dips below the horizon, the majority of people pack up their gear and head home. They see a setting sun as the end of a wonderful night of shooting, but they are missing so much. What most photographers don’t understand is that once the sun has disappeared, a new window of opportunity begins, there is still plenty of useable light left! Twilight is the period of time in between day and night, and is caused by refraction and the sun’s rays scattering from the atmosphere.
