Kauai is known as The Garden Isle for its tropical rainforests, fertile valleys and lush flora. So it is not surprising to find some of Hawaii’s most beautiful botanical gardens on Kauai. You can find three of the nation’s five National Tropical Botanical Gardens on Kauai, those are the Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden on the South Shore and Limahuli Gardens in Haena. McBryde Garden is home to the largest collection of native Hawaiian flora in the world. The 17-acre Limahuli Gardens offers endangered native plants, taro-filled agricultural terraces and beautiful views of the North Shore. Other botanical gardens and plantations include Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens, Smith’s Tropical Paradise Botanical Garden and the Kauai Coffee Plantation. You can also take a tour of Hanalei’s taro farms to learn about this versatile Hawaiian root starch. Princeville Botanical Gardens offers a unique opportunity to see a family grown and operated botanical garden, complete with exotic flowers, delicious fruit trees, healthy beehives and organic homegrown chocolate. Three days a week we give a tour treating you to homemade chocolate, honey, seasonal fruit samplings from the land, and an educational walk through our gardens learning about native Hawaiian flora, tropical medicinal, sacred flowers and food plants.
Kauai is a natural garden, yet the importance of keeping a balance of the delicate indigenous and endemic plant life thriving is the work and passion of those involved with the Kauai National Botanical Gardens and other private botanical gardens. With private and scientific grants, scientist and volunteers are helping give back through plant exploration, propagation, habitat restoration, scientific research and education.
