Olympic Thunderstorm

Olympic Thunderstorm Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary has a total area of over 3,300 square miles – it is kind of hard to miss. But your first stop should be The Olympic Coast Discovery Center, on the Port Angeles waterfront. It is a great place to begin your learning adventures on the Olympic Coast. Olympic National Park is home to a stunning variety of plants and animals. Geology, climate, isolation, history and sheer size mean this nearly one million-acre park, 95% wilderness, protects relatively intact ecosystems, making it a priceless living laboratory and a home for plants and animals large and small. Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary includes 2,408 square nautical miles of marine waters off the rugged Olympic Peninsula coastline. The sanctuary protects a productive upwelling zone - home to marine mammals and seabirds. Along its shores are thriving kelp and intertidal communities, teeming with fishes and other sea life. In the darkness of the seafloor, scattered communities of deep sea coral and sponges form habitats for fish and other important marine wildlife. Over three million visitors discover the Olympic Peninsula each year, attracted by beautiful scenery, pristine wilderness, the spectacle of wildlife and the opportunity to challenge themselves in a natural environment. Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary forms the western edge of this wonderland. The sanctuary shares 65 miles of coastline with Olympic National Park. What makes the Olympic Coast attractive is its wild character. Hiking, backpacking and camping are popular in the coastal wilderness strip of Olympic National Park.
