It is an active shield volcano with relatively gentle slopes, with a volume estimated at approximately 18,000 cubic miles. Lava eruptions from Mauna Loa are silica-poor and very fluid, and they tend to be non-explosive. If you are planing a visit to the Big Island of Hawaii, allow plenty of time to explore Mauna Loa and Kilauea in the 230,000-acre Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which, according to the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, is Hawaii's main tourist attraction. While exploring Mauna Loa you will likely experience Kilauea--the most active volcano in the world, which is located on the southeastern side of Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa means "Long Mountain," an appropriate description since it makes up half of the Big Island. It does not spew out lava in violent eruptions, but rather, oozes out lava from cracks and fissures.
