The Archangel Cascades are a series of cascades sheeting their way down the hard sandstone bedrock as the Left Fork North Creek continued its way further downstream. Like other similar pages in the Utah region, the waterfalls here were really my excuse at sharing the more epic adventure most people would come here for. In this particular instance, it was the Subway. These falls are located in a small isolated canyon west of Zion Canyon in the Zion National Park Wilderness Area. Most visitors take this route to access Zion’s “Subway,” which require a permit. The Left Fork Trailhead is located on the east side of Kolob Reservoir Road. It is a spectacular semi-technical slot canyon in the Kolob Terrace section of Zion National Park. As for the Archangel Cascades themselves, they were located a few minutes before the mouth of the Subway. Hiking to The Subway in Zion National Park is an interesting experience: lots of route-finding, stream-crossing, and waterfall-hopping. Combine that with tromping through half a foot of snow and and marvelling at the towering orange cliffs and you have a fairly outstanding way to spend a winter’s day. Just downstream from The Subway is a series of incredible cascades where white water washes over the red rocks in glorious contrast. Lots of cold snowmelt and algae made this a treacherous spot to stand and walk, but an amazing spot for photography.
