Escalante Sunset Canvas Prints
Escalante Petrified Forest State Park is located at Wide Hollow Reservoir, a small reservoir that is popular for boating, canoeing, fishing and water sports. The park includes a developed campground with RV sites and a nice group area. There is also a pleasant picnic area. On the hill above the campground you can see large petrified logs. A marked hiking trail leads through the Petrified Forest. Visitors will enjoy several trails, which wind throughout the park. The Petrified Forest Trail is a one-mile loop, winding through lava flows and thousands of pieces of petrified wood. The Sleeping Rainbows trail is an optional .75-mile loop off the Petrified Forest Trail. This section is much steeper and requires scrambling and climbing over rocks. Escalante is surrounded by the mountains, cliffs, flats, washes and sandstone canyons of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and the Dixie National Forest. The Escalante River flows from the west passing by the north side of the city and continuing eastward by an area named Big Flat. Occasional patches of petrified wood are scattered over a large area of southeast Utah and on into north Arizona, including the most famous deposits at the Petrified Forest National Park. A sizeable area is found near Escalante, spread over the edge of the plateau just northwest of town. A short trail winds past many of the fossilized samples, and a pleasant hour can be spent wandering amongst the colorful rocks.
