Lovers Point is located off the coast of the Monterey Peninsula, at the southern end of Monterey Bay. The reserve is directly offshore from Lovers Point Park, a small local park. The natural beauty and ocean resources of the Monterey Peninsula draw millions of visitors from around the world each year, including more than 65,000 scuba divers drawn by the area’s easy access, variety of wildlife, and massive kelp forests. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a major tourist attraction featuring a 28-foot living kelp forest. The exhibit includes many of the species native to the nearby marine protected areas. The aquarium also houses sea otters, intertidal wildlife, and occasionally sea turtles. In addition to diving and visiting the aquarium, people enjoy the Monterey Bay by kayaking, whale watching, charter fishing, surfing, bird watching, tide pooling and walking on the beach. Lovers Point is also where the Kelp Crawlers, a local open water swimming group, holds its weekly Sunday swim. California’s marine protected areas encourage recreational and educational uses of the ocean. Activities such as kayaking, diving, snorkeling, and swimming are allowed unless otherwise restricted. The magnificent Monterey Peninsula has been called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky and is recognized as an ideal vacation and business destination. While it is a given that the natural beauty of the area draws the visitor, it is the great hot deals in lodging provided by Monterey hotels and endless activities including golf, biking, sailing, wine tasting and fine dining that keep one coming back. Monterey's rich history and heritage is felt and can be seen across the region. Monterey has many unique attractions, whether you are visiting for the first or 10th time the stunning vistas and local attractions will always be enjoyable.
