More and more travelers are finding their way to Caye Caulker and Belize thru Cancun and Chetumal, Mexico. Inexpensive flights to Cancun are readily available and the bus line ADO services the run from Cancun to Chetumal. Two of the three water taxi companies, San Pedro Express and Water Jets Express, have daily run from Chetumal to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye in Belize, where you will clear Belize Customs and then a 30 minute boat ride to Caye Caulker, usually arriving around 6,30 pm at night. Depending on when your flight into Cancun arrives, you may have to make the journey from Cancun to Chetumal the following day. The beaches here on the caye tend to be soft and weedy due to the fact the reef protects us from the Caribbean surf and does not allow it to scour the sand free of growth. This allows the island to survive as wave action would eventually wear the caye completely away. It also contributes to a vibrant ecosystem which encourages sea life to flourish. The island name is spelled Cay Corker. Known historically for its plentiful supply of exposed fresh water at La Aguada, one theory holds that this island was a favorite stop for sailors to replenish and cork water bottles. With few inhabitants, food could be grown with sustainable methods of agriculture. The coconut and the fishing industry became important economic staples of the island. Even today a few of the older women continue to process coconut oil for their own use and to sell, although generally the coconuts themselves are harvested and shipped to the mainland.
